An ode to the old Galician wash houses where women used to gather to confide in each other and do laundry, this also serves as a tribute to that invisible and often unrewarded work done by the female population. A multidisciplinary reflection on tangible and intangible heritage in an angelic and melancholic space, of forests and seas, ecosystems that are complemented by these working women, with the music of this traveling choir. In her recent work she dominates photography with social content, where she uses architecture as a contextual framework. She currently combines her work as a freelancer specializing in architectural photography with teaching photography at art schools in Madrid, Hamilton College and universities such as Alcalá de Henares, URJC in Madrid or Tokai University in Tokyo. His work has been awarded and exhibited nationally and internationally at the FAD21 Awards, Embassy of Spain in Washington, Instituto Cervantes in Chicago, Pratt Institute in New York, Madrid Design Festival 21 and 24, PhotoEspaña 22, 20, 17, COAM21 Awards, Venice Biennale 2016, 2018 and 2023 Copenhagen Festival, PhotoLondon, SiFest Savignano, Granada Photography Festival, Sony World Photography Awards, XIX and XV COAG Awards, XIV Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism, the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the Eme3 International Festival, the Picasso Museum, the ICO Museum in Madrid, among others.
Filmmaker and artist born in Vigo, 1983. His films have been shown at film festivals such as Cannes, Berlinale, Locarno, Toronto, Rotterdam, New York, Viennale, IDFA, Cinema du rèel, Oberhausen, Clermont-Ferrand... And there have been specific focuses on his work in places like the New York Film Festival (USA), BAFICI (Argentina), Cali Festival (Colombia) or NeMAF (South Korea). His films and video installations have been shown in art centers such as MoMA, Centre Pompidou, MACBA, CCCB, Casa Encendida or in art fairs such as ARCO, Estampa, SWAB, Paris Photo (France), Photo London (UK), Unseen (Amsterdam) or the Aichi Triennale (Japan). Harvard University awarded him in 2016 the Robert Fulton III Fellowship, intended for emerging filmmakers “of independent spirit, exploring diverse cultures with a deep aesthetic sensibility”. Samsara (2023 - Berlinale - Encounters / Special Jury Prize), Lúa vermella (2020 - Berlinale Forum) and Costa da morte (2013 - Locarno / Best Emerging Director Award) are his three feature films to date. Ariel, shot in the Azores Islands, will be his fourth feature film. His last two short films: Sycorax (2021) and El sembrador de estrellas (2022) have been premiered at the Cannes Directors' Fortnight and in the Official Selection of the Berlinale, respectively, being awarded at the latter festival. Lois Patiño is part of the generation of Galician filmmakers known as 'Novo Cinema Galego', together with auteurs such as Oliver Laxe, Eloy Enciso, Diana Toucedo or Alberto Gracia.
